REVIEW: Bernard J. Mullin — Reimagining America’s Dream (BOOK)
“More than 40 percent of Americans think that civil war is likely in the next decade. Twenty percent believe violence can be justified in support of political objectives. And as many as 37 percent say they would support their state or region seceding from the United States.

To top it all, the majority of Americans are no longer confident that the electoral system reflects the will of the people, and nearly half believe that one party or the other will overturn the legitimate transfer of power in the near future,” writes Bernard J. Mullin, with an appropriate chagrin at the beginning of his new book, Reimagining America’s Dream: Making It Attainable for All. Part of the effectiveness of Mullin communicating the core concepts is his ability to seamlessly provide personal analogies from his own experiences with the statistically-backed arguments laid out for the book’s core themes. It’s as much a love letter to America as it is a critique, and from that critique something laying the foundation for a new, better approach that can compensate for us all.
This kind of effectiveness is particularly highlighted in the book’s first chapter. “As I sat back in my seat and waited for the plane’s wheels to touch down, I couldn’t help but grin. It was just like the movies … but even more so. The sense of America as a big country where more is always possible would become a cornerstone of my personal American dream when I moved permanently to the United States a few years later. Yet it wasn’t completely new to me, even on that first trip,” Mullin writes.
He also states regarding the work itself, “This book emerges from and reflects my deep appreciation of the country that has given me the opportunity to succeed in a way I could barely have dreamed of when I first arrived on these shores. I am grateful to all the Americans who embraced me, adopted me, and made me one of their own. My most fervent hope now is that I can contribute to passing on this same incredible gift to future generations, including both those born in this land and those who are following the same immigrant path that I took. I hope I will soon look upon a day when we come together again as a united people to create a better America, an America in which all our children can achieve everything that their hard work and talent deserves.”

As someone initially from the outside, Mullin is able to communicate core concepts and ideas more efficiently. He’s able to make it more objective, obviously so, and from that flows an even stronger sense of expertise. He’s unemotional, clinical, and makes a lot of sense. I appreciate Mullin’s ability even to have wit, and something of a wry sense of humor. The book is equal parts expert TedTalk, semi-memoir, and overall argument for what Mullin advocates for from the highlights in the opening part of the text.
