REVIEW: Conceptz — Drippin & Drownin (SINGLE)
“Drippin & Drownin” is the latest single by Orange County, NY natives, and brothers HighRowGlyphFix and producer Short Fuze. Having released their single all the way back in 2012 (man, time flies) they’ve had a string of notable successes over the growth of their career, ranging from performances at BET afterparties and working alongside masters like Wiz Khalifa, King Los, and Gucci Mane. The duo has been working hard for a very long time and despite not reading a full album for some time they’ve had a string of hit singles littered out over the past few years all culminating in their most recent release.

Starting with a playful vocal of Phfix saying “drip drip drip” he proclaims proudly he’s Drippin, they drowning before just going all-in on creative visual descriptions in the cyclical nature of fashion and how he’s always elegant and advocating to dress well in every occasion. It’s very reminiscent of the more fashion-forward rap songs we’ve seen as the fashion game in the scene keeps evolving and becoming just as important to an artist’s identity just as much as their work is. “It’s that drip that gets you higher than that aerospace,” he says at one point and the way he presents these verses genuinely makes you feel it. “Your boy is styling,” he says at one point and while that certainly goes without saying for him, it’s also very indicative of the song itself from a production standpoint because the thing just sounds incredible.
Short Fuze’s bass and reverb-heavy beat complete with what sounds like distorted audio being reversed add so much sonic layering to this piece that gives it a unique sound. The duo’s work has begun to be featured in a lot of mainstream places and listening to the instrumental it’s not hard to see why. Just listening to this instrumental on its own, it sounds like something you’d hear in a commercial for a high-end car or brand, you know, one of those songs you hear and frantically pull out your phone to ask what it’s from. It never gets overly flashy because it leaves it to the verses being dolled out, but it knows when to wind down on its elements before coming back harder than before. Just some really impeccable producing that will really stay with you after you’ve listened to it even once.
There’s honestly so much going on in each component it’s a song that’s also begging to be remixed because there’s so much you can do with a meat and potatoes kind of song like this. If you’re not a hip-hop fan or a fan of trap-like songs, I don’t know if this will really convince you. It’s just a mood of a song and if you’re dialed into all the right ways you’ll come out of it with a genuine love for these guys and they deserve all the support. As I stated one of their earliest breaks was performing at a BET after party. They need to be headlining the stage at their awards next time.
