Elliott Noble-Holt’s new book is one of those things where you don’t know quite what to expect. After all, the title — much like the man featured on the cover — feels like a witty bait-and-switch. On the one hand, you have something that looks very much similar to the vein and tonality of projects like the Kane Hodder documentary To Hell and Back, or even dare one say the fun and brash nature of a book like Donald J. Trump and Bill Zanker’s Think Big and Kick Ass: In Business and in Life. Noble-Holt appears with his arms crossed, staring punkishly straight into the lens of the camera. He almost looks like a sanded-down version of a Hell’s Angel, in a good way. Hip, buff, and masculine.

Yet opening the book and reading the contents on its pages reveals someone that is living proof looks are, and are not, always what they seem. Noble-Holt is an unapologetically devout Christian, a proud openly gay man, a lucky husband to Donte and father to Isa, an entrepreneur-turned-millionaire, and a proponent of advancements in the field of healthcare information management. In short, he looks like a typical, post-modern American. Someone whose ability to be whatever they want, cutting across old ideals, stereotypes, tenets, and looks is a testament to their very own success strategy that they swear by.

Noble-Holt never comes across as high-handed or as a proverbially Messianic figure, the way some folks writing self-help and inspirational memoirs can sound. He’s someone who can actually walk the walk on that fine line between motivational prose and good, old-fashioned, ruminating storytelling. He’s not the most polished writer, and that’s ironically to his benefit. His being able to communicate in a laidback but still affecting house style is part of the inspirational charm. As are quotes of his such as the following: “My life is proof of the power of thoughts becoming things.” Or, for that matter, the title of the book itself. Specifically, Bald Bearded Boss: Manifesting Who You’re Meant to Be.

“While my approach to life, friendships, family, and faith might not be for everyone, the test of whether it is right is in the evidence. It has worked for me. It has brought me business success. It has also allowed me to have a great deal of personal happiness. For sure, I have been through challenges. But I have learned to take difficult experiences in the most favorable light. I feel that God and the Universe have put me through them to appreciate them and offer them as instruction to others,” Noble-Holt writes. In less competent hands, this kind of statement could unintentionally ring as authoritarian, or sanctimonious.

But with Noble-Holt, it just makes the reader feel safe and validated. Like they’re genuinely in good hands. “It’s a calling, not unlike those that preachers have,” he writes. “I don’t see myself in a church. But I want to talk about

But I want to talk about God and the Universe’s impact on my life and what it can do for other people. I want to show them that if they just stopped, centered themselves, focused, came up with an action plan, and then executed it, they could live the way they wanted. So many people are stuck in a rut and can’t move from it. They don’t know which way to turn.”
