REVIEW: Iva Toric — Trust Fall (SINGLE)
As far as songs of the summer go, metal is rarely the genre people will pull from to pump up their playlists. Their loss, I say, but that’s why we have Autumn; and, coincidentally enough, another word for Autumn is Fall… and San Francisco-based doom metal legend-to-be just released her latest single, “Trust Fall.” It’s literally right there in the title, pack it up. The Song of the Autumn is upon us with our pumpkin-spiced everything and trick-or-treaters well on the way.
“Trust Fall” is a perfect song of the season, when you think about it; it’s about escaping a nasty relationship and making do with your strengths, taking that leap of faith, and trusting you’ll land where you’re meant to. For people seeing their summer flings fizzle and burn out, this one will hit you right where it hurts in the best ways. It’s like good advice from a best friend; sometimes you don’t wanna hear it, but you need to.
There’s a good emotional punch at the core of Iva Toric’s entire discography, and while her track record is fairly small (one record and some singles out with another record on its way), there’s a great emotional depth on display that some metal acts never figure out within their entire careers. The youthful career is a career full of promise, and Toric is bursting at the seams with such ambition and potential.
Functioning as the third single of an undetermined batch, “Trust Fall” further welcomes listeners into Iva Toric’s upcoming sophomore release Dead Reckoning. About the project, Toric says “I wrote and recorded a new album during the pandemic, and I named it ‘Dead Reckoning’ because I felt like I was searching for something within the deep depression the pandemic brought me. It opened thoughts that may have been closed to me in other circumstances and when I wrote it, I was very much alone. The music is even darker and has a sense of solitude.
The lyrics explore my relationships with myself and others.” Well said, for someone with only a single full-length under their belts, and with every new interview, Iva Toric further cements the idea that her themes aren’t some amateur slap-dash effort. Coming across a modern artist with as much earnest intention not only for her art but for the world feels exceedingly rare in the music industry’s current state.
On top of all the earnest prose, there’s no denying that “Trust Fall” is still a banger of a metal track. The melody lends itself to a softer ear than most typical metal fare, but the clever balancing act of metal instrumentation and almost classical, operatic vocals from Toric give the single more than enough foundation to build off of. In regards to her songs, Iva Toric reaches out to her audience and sends the single out into the world.
“When you, the listener, hear my music, you may hear heartbreaking honesty. You may hear parts of your own story echoed back to you in my voice. You may feel like you aren’t alone, and somebody understands. I hope you hear me–my heart and mind reaching out to join you on your journey through this life.”
