The crux of Kate King, MA, LPC, ATR-BC’s new book is Covid-19. It’s aptly titled The Radiant Life Project: Awaken Your Purpose, Heal Your Past, and Transform Your Future. However, as King is quick to state near the beginning of the read, Covid-19 is just the conduit for something much deeper. An externalized elixir to a human conditional trait she believes is redeemable by way of her particular brand of psychosocial philosophy. “This book is not about Covid-19,” King says matter-of-factly, “but the pandemic was an influencing factor that unearthed hidden opportunities for my growth and transformation — as adversity tends to do — and birthed this book as a self-healing toolkit for the masses with just the right balance of challenge and support.

This writing aligned with my own exceedingly uncomfortable awakening at the beginning of 2022, which was uncovered by personal and professional burnout unlike anything I had ever before experienced. On the radiance scale, I’d say I was subterranean. I was a lackluster, dulled, and numbed version of myself, and I felt farther apart from my true nature than ever before. It became crystal clear that I needed to take extreme measures to counterbalance my stress and exhaustion. Working tirelessly as a healthcare provider during the pandemic while simultaneously navigating complex sociocultural expectations, an unsustainably expanded social network, my family’s well-being, and my own personal fears of the Covid virus nearly drowned me.”

It’s through the statement of King’s own, personal fallibilities that what she’s talking about ultimately becomes that much more reliable. There’s an affable touch to her already formidable and innovative thinking here, something that humanizes — and serves the greater points — making up the intellectual and psychosocial densities within the pages of The Radiant Life Project: Awaken Your Purpose, Heal Your Past, and Transform Your Future. “By calling The Radiant Life Project a project, I acknowledge the work-in-progress we all are. I honor the continuous process of growth and discovery in the journey toward the life we are each capable of creating for ourselves. For the sake of living radiantly, hear me when I say this: The single most crucial project any of us will ever experience — the one that has the most profound impact on the whole of your being — is the ongoing project of healing and inner growth.

Like climbing an infinite staircase, the project of Self has no particular destination, but with each step it elevates you,” King states. “…My choice to step out of the madness of our normal societal rhythm had reflected to these people their own imbalances. They had also become so caught up in their many projects that their Self-project had been sadly neglected. These com- munity members responded to my experience of burnout with resonance, but had not yet given themselves permission to extricate their strangled voices from the vice-grip of societal expectations and cry out for help. Somewhere along the way, the authenticity and radiance of these empathic others had clustered together and sunk to the bottom of their ever-growing and demanding priority list.”
