“Many people believe it’s hard to coach adults, it’s harder to coach college students, and it’s even more difficult to coach teenagers. It’s also difficult to win one championship. Winning a repeat or a three-peat is extra hard. I was the head coach of the Punahou School Boys’ Varsity Tennis Team for twenty-two years, and we were fortunate to win twenty-two consecutive State Championships.

The media shared with me that it’s the longest state championship streak in all sports in the United States. Yes, a perfect twenty-two out of twenty-two,” writes Rusty Komori in his new book, Superior: Creating a Superior Culture of Excellence. “I’ve learned an important lesson from this experience: There’s a tremendous difference between a culture of excellence versus building your superior culture of excellence, and there’s a gigantic difference between paying attention to details versus superior disciplined details.

Before striving to build your superior culture of excellence, you must first begin with mindset… It will help you stay focused and motivated even when you experience setbacks and failures. The right mindset plays a crucial role in determining the level of success you can achieve in your personal and professional life and will help you develop the skills and habits necessary to achieve your goals and reach your full potential.”

Komori writes the self-assuredness of a seasoned coach, but simultaneously has the evocative descriptiveness and empathic values of a true writer. Superior: Creating a Superior Culture of Excellence reads as something wholly entertaining, fast-paced, and genuinely enjoyable aside from its topics from start to finish. “I’ve seen research about how having a positive mindset directly impacts your overall well-being. These studies have shown that having the right mindset can reduce stress, improve mental fitness, and increase life satisfaction. By cultivating a mindset that focuses on gratitude, optimism, and self-belief, you will cope with challenges more effectively and build stronger relationships, which will lead to a more fulfilling journey through life. What do you think is the mindset of champions?” ruminates Komori, in a key passage.

He also states, “…a victim mindset tend(s) to focus on what is wrong, dwell on past mistakes or failures, and see themselves as helpless victims of circumstances beyond their control… In contrast, a victor mindset is characterized by feelings of empowerment and resilience. Victors take responsibility for their actions and outcomes, and they are committed to finding solutions and taking proactive steps to overcome all challenges. People with a victor mindset view setbacks and failures as opportunities for growth and learning, and they always exhibit a positive attitude, even in the face of adversity. They also have the ability to be laser-focused on one positive among twenty negatives.”

Effectively, take control of your life. Be (holistically, self-empoweredly) superior. “All of us experience adversity and challenges in our lives, and some people experience deeper levels than others. Hitting rock bottom in your life may or may not happen to you, but if it did, how would you deal with it?” Komori writes. “…When bad things happen, most people blame the situation for happening and feel sorry for themselves. But if you view life from that perspective, you can’t truly welcome adversities and life’s challenges correctly. Life doesn’t happen to you. Life happens for you.”
