REVIEW: Stacy Gabel — “Stir Crazy” (SINGLE)
Stacy Gabel’s new song “Stir Crazy” might actually depict the psyche of human kind as we know it. After months of social distancing and working remotely from home, we’ve all had to adjust in some way. “Stir Crazy” lights the way during a time of isolation. In many ways, too, Gabel lets down her guard in “Stir Crazy” and reminds us that it’s okay to feel the way we’re feeling. Afterall, we’re in this together and it’s song like Gabel’s the binds us tighter.

Gabel utilizes her strong vocals to present her case. In a fascinating turn, her main instrumentation is the acoustic guitar. While there is also a balanced mix of strings, keys and percussion, the guitar is a prime choice. I liken her guitar playing to a folk song, or an Americana gem. I think when you hear that the song is entitled “Stir Crazy” you might be getting something more frenzied or electric. This song is more than meets the eye — and ears. I loved the layering of the acoustic guitar and the way it wraps around those simple words she sings we’re stir crazy. The strings do make a point to come to the surface. You hear them if you really focus, but I found my attention going back to the slick guitar and Gabel’s voice.
Gabel, who is from Pennsylvania and has earned numerous Lehigh Valley Music Awards three years running, has a classy voice. She’s also a stage and screen actress, so she knows her way around committing herself to a character and a scene. I think she really strikes a positive turn in “Stir Crazy”. She has the murmuring of a flawless Patsy Cline and the dressings of an Alanis Morissette-esque pop star. She elevates the room, strengthens the track with her delivery. Argue, if you will, that the acoustic guitar or the lyrics are the foundation of “Stir Crazy” but it’s Gabel’s voice that launches “Stir Crazy” into the upper stratosphere. Gabel’s artistic prowess and genial voice is superb. We got to love this world we’re in, Gabel endears to her listener. She’s warm, affectionate and sets the listener at ease. No matter the uncertain surroundings, the listener is centered, all focus on Gabel’s calming voice. Even when the guitar loops, it’s Gabel’s charm that mesmerizes.

When you dig deeper, this song has some real moments. It hits home. In her simplicity, she develops a very clear, revelation of a tune. As a listener, I didn’t want or need complicated prose. I wanted and needed clear and concise — “Stir Crazy” leads the way. The irony is that her voice and the guitar riffs are quite balanced. It’s a great song to have in the background and it’s also a fine choice to have one of those morning listens to really get you ready for the day. It’s nice to recognize what you’re going through is normal and if anything, it can put a nice smile on your face to start the day.
