The indie-pop duo Trisha & Thara are already diversifying their sound in a brief career. The 16 and 13-year-old, respectively, have maintained a prolific pace since first emerging in 2020 playing shows in respected venues. Their appearances at Boston’s Hard Rock Café, Loretta’s Last Call, and the Faneuil Hall Market Place, among other locations, have brought them priceless exposure. The duo’s first two singles “You Used to Be” and “Regret” made waves appearing on dozens of influential playlists, the popular Women of Substance podcast, and amassing over 100,000 Spotify streams in all.

It isn’t a stretch, given such success, that Trisha & Thara would settle for more of the same. They do not. Their new single “Too Late Again” jettisons the “slow bop” template of their preceding singles in favor of a stylish pop gem peppered with energetic EDM flair. The single retrains a great homemade quality thanks in no small part to its origins. Trisha and Thara have attended a production class at the renowned Berklee College of Music and record the initial tracks at home, even cutting the vocals, before sending it on. Their collaborator producer Brad Young’s CV features collaborations with Marky Mark, New Kids on the Block alum Danny Wood, and LFO and his touch with Trisha & Thara’s music has a positive transformative effect on the single.

The lyrics show astonishing maturity for two young performers. While they aren’t autobiographical in the usual sense, the words for “Too Late Again” reveal Trisha & Thara are interested in serving as keen-eyed observers. They are more than talented enough to fill the role. Their vocal delivery never falters either — this isn’t even the “final” singing voice either vocalist will have, far from it, and they already sound like the proverbial complete package.

Their phrasing couples emotional nuance alongside theatrical qualities that are never overstated. There’s nothing inflated about the way they treat the words and even their voices obey the song’s dynamics throughout the rising and falling arrangement. The contrast of light and heavy comes from the low-key, even soulful, verses before bursting into EDM fueled exuberance during the chorus. Trisha & Thara key into that from the outset.

“Too Late Again” never overstays its welcome and never sounds rushed. It isn’t just the lyrical content and vocals that show off their improbable maturity but the design and presentation of the track. This is a sleek and thoroughly polished outing any performer, particularly veterans, would be proud to call their own. It holds up well under repeated listens.

Listeners should expect them to continue working in this vein for some time to come. “Too Late Again” makes it clear though that Trisha & Thara are interested in exploring every possible inch of this musical thread and there’s nothing about their music and singing that suggests they aren’t capable of even more. The duo’s new single should further catapult them into the spotlight where they rightly belong, and we can expect them to remain for many years to come.
